We are delighted to invite students who identify as Māori, Pacific or from Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CALD) communities, studying medicine, nursing or allied health to apply for the Pegasus Health Workforce Development Scholarships 2024.
Background
Pegasus Health is a collaborative network of general practitioners, practice nurses and wider practice teams who seek to improve the health and wellness of our community. We work alongside other organisations to achieve this aim, within Te Whatu Ora Waitaha area. We also work in partnership with our communities across 96 general practice locations, with 555 GPs and their teams, supporting the health and well-being of 484,737 enrolled people.
Pegasus Health has for many years recognised that developing our workforce is vital to improving the health status of the populations in the communities in which we serve. Since 2001 when these scholarships were first established, numerous aspiring recipients have been assisted, many of whom have gone on to outstanding careers in primary health care.
Allocation of scholarships
Scholarships are available to assist with fees for students undertaking:
- Year 4 or 5 medicine
- Year 2 or 3 nursing
- Year 2, 3 or 4 training in an allied health profession.
Applicants must:
- Identify as Māori, Pacific or from Refugee and Migrant background communities
- Be a domestic student
- Be a resident of Canterbury
- Be enrolled in a Canterbury tertiary institution, or a distance learning student living in Canterbury
- Supply the documents requested below.
Applications close: 5pm, Monday 29 April 2024.
Successful applicants will be expected to attend the awards ceremony on the evening of Thursday 6 June 2024.

Before you begin your application, please ensure you have the following documents ready to upload:
- Official record of last year’s (2023) study academic record – issued by the institution or student portal (this can be a screenshot)
- Official proof of enrolment in 2024 – issued by the institution or student portal (this can be a screenshot)
- Provide a letter of introduction/reference from a community leader, a person that knows you as a student, as a person or as part of your community. This can be a kaumatua, minister, mentor, tutor, religious leader or an elder in your community.
- Provide a cover letter (up to 500 words). If you prefer to upload a video instead of a cover letter, please contact pegasusscholarships@pegasus.health.nz
You can tell us about your:
- identity, values, cultural links to your community
- strengths and challenges you may have faced
- interests
- where you make a difference in respect to the health of your particular community
- goals or career aspirations
- anything else you’d like to tell us about yourself
Please tell us about yourself, your whānau, aiga and community, your interests, strengths and any aspect of your identity or life experiences that have been important to you. We want to know your interests and aspirations as a health professional. Please tell us about your professional interests and what kind of health work you’re passionate about.
We also encourage applications from LGBTI+, takatāpui, MVPFAFF+ students, students with disabilities, and students who had personal or whānau experience of using health and mental health services.
