Mistletoe and Milestone for Senior Chef

Christmas celebrations were combined with a significant milestone for Senior Chef Graduates last Friday.

Senior Chef is a free programme administered by Pegasus Health that teaches older people living alone or with one other person, practical cooking skills, meal planning, budgeting, shopping tips and good nutrition.

The programme welcomed its 2000th participant earlier this year which made its annual Christmas celebrations even more special.

Senior Chef Programme Co-ordinator Jane Callahan says the programme has evolved a lot since it began in 2009.

“Now anyone over 60 years can attend, while Māori or Pasifika can attend from 55 years. A referral from a GP is welcome however it is now possible for people to refer themselves,” says Jane.

A Christmas themed quiz, great food and the chance to catch up with class buddies led to a great turnout at the event and enthusiasm to spread the word about Senior Chef to their friends and family.

Classes will be available in Avonhead, Linwood, St Albans, Ashburton, Kaiapoi and Oxford from the end of January next year.
