Clinical Connect – Peer Education Programme

Founded in 1994, the Clinical Connect – Peer Education Programme* provides continuing education to primary health professionals, with a focus on promoting best practice and optimal use of health resources across the primary health sector. Specifically designed for clinicians in primary care, the programme is for: General Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, Community Pharmacists and Practice Nurses. The programme runs in Canterbury and in several regions across New Zealand.

How the programme works

The Clinical Connect – Peer Education Programme provides in-depth education on topics that are engaging, relevant and strategically important to the New Zealand health system. The programme promotes evidence informed practice and encourages clinicians to discuss and reflect on their own practice and that of their peers, and to apply the learning in clinical practice.

The same group of clinicians meet in real time for 1.5 hours, 5 times per year, either physically in a meeting space or online via a Zoom meeting. Groups have 12-15 clinicians attend and a trained Small Group Leader supports the group to reflect on their practice with case studies and interactive discussions, informed by evidence and data.

Some examples of recent topics include: ‘Early Cancer Diagnosis in Primary Care’, ‘Neurodiversity with a focus on ADHD’ and ‘Heart Failure’.

What our attendees are saying:

“As a new primary care practitioner this education session is extremely valuable”

“First peer education meeting, I found it collegial and informative, good to be able to bring patient cases into a targeted discussion”
