Health Literacy: A community survey of Pacific peoples in Canterbury - Esala Vakamacawai

Introduction
Health literacy means being able to access, understand, appraise, and use information and services in ways that promote and maintain good health and well-being. It is more than being able to access websites, read pamphlets, and follow prescribed health-seeking behaviours. It includes the ability to think critically and make informed health decisions.
Doctors have an oath to serve patients to the best of their ability and provide information that promotes good health. Many factors, primarily patient and clinical factors, affect the clarity of communication.
This survey explores the narrative of Pacific patients in Canterbury and their understanding of doctors at the clinic. It uses talanoa (discussion), a Pacific qualitative research pedagogy, to explore patients' perspectives on challenges they encounter when talking to their doctors.
