Sustaining general practitioner wellbeing

Retaining our general practice workforce is essential to sustaining high-quality primary care. Focus groups with local GPs revealed that alongside reducing administrative pressure, better access to wellbeing supports and a healthier practice culture are key to retaining and sustaining our GP workforce.

Sustaining GP Wellbeing Toolkit

In 2023, 59% of Canterbury GPs indicated they were considering retiring or leaving general practice in the near future. In response, the Primary Care Taskforce has developed the Sustaining GP Wellbeing Toolkit: a practical, evidence informed resource designed by and for local clinicians. It brings together practical wellbeing actions, clear pathways to professional supports, and guidance for creating practice environments where GPs can thrive.

This toolkit encourages small, sustainable steps that make a meaningful difference. Explore the toolkit to find the ideas and supports that resonate with you and your team.

Listen to Dr Anna Maze (1 min 33 sec) talk about the toolkit below.

“This toolkit starts a conversation about what we can put in place to tip us toward thriving.”
