Reading in Mind book scheme for mental health and wellbeing

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health issue like anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder or worry, reading books on the issue can help you better manage your mental health and well being.

How it works

The Reading in Mind book scheme provides selected books and other resources (e-books, DVDs and CDs) on a wide range of mental health and wellbeing topics.

The selected books come reviewed and/or recommended by mental health professionals, the Mental Health Foundation of New Zealand, the Christchurch City Libraries or the Christchurch-based Mental Health Education Resource Centre (MHERC). Some of the books have been recommended by other, similar book schemes available in New Zealand or internationally. Some may also come recommended by users of Reading in Mind.

You can choose a book (or other resource) from the book lists on the website. Your health provider or local librarian can also help you choose a book. You can check out the book at your library or place a hold on it if it is not available at your local library. MHERC can post books out to you and will include a pre-paid post bag for returning books.

Once you have read the book, you can to discuss what you have learned with your health provider or librarian. You can provide feedback on the book via the feedback form available on the website.
